But Jin Heon and Hee Jin had so much history and love together.that I just didn't buy that his heart would just change When Jin Heon was like "sorry, I like Sam Soon instead" I just.didn't buy it? In hindsight, I'm not even sure why Jin Heon initiated the love contract with Sam Soon at all. However, it was clear that they still had feelings for one another. Their romance and misunderstanding was a straightforward one - she didn't want to burden him with her misfortune and he didn't know why she left. The realistic version of this scenario would end up having the guy getting "friend zoned" and ultimately rejected by his friend (to no fault of the girl) OR a stalker scenario (which is probably much worse).Īs the watcher, I knew how it was going to end since Sam Soon was obviously the main protagonist, but midway through the story I couldn't help but root for a Jin Heon and Hee Jin ending. You're telling me that a rich, good looking doctor would leave where he lives, effectively quit his job, and then go to a country where he doesn't speak the language to support a girl that he likes as she tries to reconcile with her ex? Please. That said, I found the Henry and Hee-Jin pairing just terrible in this regard. However, I was still pretty OK with their relationship and found it plausible that they would be together. They even went with the "love contract turned into real love" approach that you sometimes see. In the case of Sam Soon and Jin Heon, the underdog was Sam Soon and you were meant to root for her because she was fat/average and the Chaebol was Jin Heon. For example, the cinderella/underdog girl paired with good looking rich guy element was definitely here. On the other hand, you still had kdrama stereotypes in this show that took away from the realism. And if there's any place for a whirlwind romance, it's a kdrama. Personally, I'm OK with idealized romance, fully knowing that it's not going to exist in real life. I'm not looking for a hyper-realistic window for two people in a relationship. I think my issue with this is that when I decide to watch TV, I'm looking for an escapism. Both characters yearned for it, but because of their breakup experiences, they lost faith about it at times and ultimately accepted that a person's feelings might change on a whim. For example, the hyper-practical way that the characters, especially Sam Soon and Jin Heon, viewed love was just so pratical that it made me sad. I felt it TOO true to real life in the wrong ways, while maintaining some of the annoying fantastical features that often appear in k-dramas. Overall, I think my main gripe with the show is that it evokes depression, but maybe it was just my personal reaction to it. Can't really discuss it without plot points, so spoilers follow: I've read that this show was revolutionary for its time, but I get the sense it hasn't aged well. I have to say that I don't really understand the hype. After finishing the last episode, I feel really lukewarm about the series. My girlfriend highly recommended My Name Is Kim Sam Soon/My Lovely Sam Soon, so I finally sat down and watched it.
